Our Nation’s roots trace back through multiple physical communities, or úxwumixw, before evolving into a government entity in 1923. The majority of our community resides on the North Shore of Vancouver, while a smaller yet significant population inhabits Squamish along the Squamish River. Our Nation is a dynamic force in the region, rooted in our traditions while striving for great things.
Our History
Our rich history spans millennia, evidenced by an archaeological site dating back 8,600 years. Our oral traditions narrate the emergence of the Squamish People in our lands.
Our Culture
Sḵwx̱wú7mesh culture is a tapestry influenced by our land and water, and woven by generations of our people. We continue to uphold the customs, traditions, and wisdom of the ancestors, passing them to our youth.
Our Land
Sḵwx̱wú7mesh traditional territory is 6,732 square kilometers (673,200 hectares), encompassing 23 villages totaling 28.28 square kilometers (2,828 hectares).
Our Language
Our language is a testament to resilience, with dozens of us learning it as a second language from our Elders, preserving it amidst a decline in first-language speakers. It is unique yet part of the Coast Salish and Salishan language families.
