As a response to member concerns about the disruption and safety issues around fireworks in our community, Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw (Council) passed the Squamish Nation Fireworks Ban Bylaw in September 2024 prohibiting the use, sale, possession, and discharge of fireworks on reserve lands. This bylaw aligns Squamish Nation with neighbouring municipalities that ban fireworks. The ban addresses community safety, as well as climate and environmental concerns.
Selling, purchasing, possessing, or discharging fireworks on-reserve is not permitted at any time.
Fines for violating this bylaw start at $250 per infraction per day. Ta na wa Téy̓wilhay̓lhem (Public Safety) Department will be monitoring throughout the community, starting in October. Fines will be issued for any violations and can reach as high as $1,000 for multiple infractions.
