We are very pleased to share the Squamish Nation’s new Executive Director for Ḵ’iyáx̱an Ch’áwch’aw (Community Services), Brian Baker. Brian is from the esteemed Squamish Nation Baker family, his late mother is Judy Baker and his father is Harry Baker.
Brian started working with the Squamish Nation in 1995 as a security guard. He went on to receive an Arts Degree in Psychology and a Certificate in Criminology and continued to work with the Nation, including in the Income Assistance Department as a case worker and later in a newly formed Community Operations Department. Brian successfully worked his way up to the position of Director of Community Operations before taking on this new role, starting in February 2025, as Executive Director of Community Services.
After 30 years of dedicated work in the Nation, Brian brings extensive experience in community operations, leadership, and organizational management. As the Executive Director, he is leading six key departments: wa ns7eyx̱ ta temíxw (Community Lands), Ta na wa Shéway I7x̱w ta Úxwumixw (Planning and Capital Projects), Ta na wa Téy̓wilhay̓lhem (Public Safety), Ta na wa Ch’áwat ta Sx̱wéx̱wel (Squamish Valley Operations), Nexwsp’áyaḵen ta Úxwumixw (Community Operations), and Sen̓áḵw Services.
Brian is dedicated to creating opportunities for these departments to collaborate, ensuring services to the Squamish People are delivered effectively and efficiently, while always being guided by the core values of the Nation.
When Brian isn’t working, he enjoys time with his wife of 36 years, his two children and five grandchildren – including significant time attending all the sports events of his children and grandchildren. Brian describes himself as a passionate sports enthusiast, and at the top of his list is golf.
