External Call for Artists
Inspired by The Birdsong Project and supported by a microgrant from the nonprofit Ocean Wise, UBC student Michelle Read is launching The Ocean Song Project—an international, ocean-inspired music and storytelling collective that aims to build awareness and foster connections around ocean health and related themes such as climate justice. The project will culminate in a published digital album available for streaming, along with a website hub featuring accompanying artwork and blog posts.
We are currently seeking:
- Musicians and composers inspired by the ocean
- Visual artists to create cover art and animations to accompany the music
- Traditional knowledge educators and storytellers with perspectives on water stewardship and community
Deadline to apply: May 5th for honorarium eligibility, June 15th for volunteer participation

Capilano Community Services Society (CCSS) is seeking a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh artist to lead Carving Our Path, a youth-focused carving project that fosters cultural connection, artistic expression, and mentorship. This initiative will provide youth (ages 12 to 24) the opportunity to learn traditional carving techniques under the guidance of an Indigenous Artist/Facilitator.
The selected artist will collaborate with CCSS to design and carve a final collaborative piece. Youth will first work on individual small cedar panels to build confidence and skills before contributing to a larger, shared artwork that will be prominently displayed in the youth spaces at Lions Gate Community Recreation Centre.
The artist fee is $2,545, which includes $2,000 for the main cedar panel, $520 for workshop facilitation, and $25 for mileage.
The deadline for submissions is May 2, 2025.
